Oil Pulling Remixed

Many of us are hip to oil pulling but there are ways you can take your oil pulling to the next level by adding essential oils. Before we get in to ways to remix our oil pulling practice let’s get down to what oil pulling is.

What is oil pulling?

It is the method of swishing oil in your mouth as a part of an oral care regimen. This practice stems from the traditional Aryuvedic remedies.

What are the benefits of oil pulling?

  • Freshens breath
  • Pulls toxins from the body
  • Whitens teeth
  • Strengthens teeth, gums, and jaws
  • Aids in the prevention of mouth diseases such as cavities and gingivitis
  • All natural and inexpensive

What oils are used for oil pulling?

Originally, sesame oil is recommended although some people prefer to use coconut or grapeseed oil.

How is oil pulling done?

Take a tablespoon of oil in your mouth and begin pulling it through your mouth and teeth slowly and deliberately. Be sure not to swallow any of the oil. Oil pull for 10-15 minutes then spit out the oil. his should be done daily.

How to remix your oil pulling practice:

Adding a few drops of an essential oil to your oil pulling can have additional health benefits and take your oil pulling to the next level. Here are a few of my favorite essential oils to add to my oil pulling:

  • Peppermint essential oil: This is good for freshening your breath. Also great if you use coconut oil for it’s benefits but don’t love the taste of coconut oil.
  • Clove essential oil: Great for relieving toothaches
  • Eucalyptus oil: If you are congested or have a stuffy nose this is the perfect oil to clear up congestion
  • Lemon essential oil: Another great tasting oil and there are claims of teeth whitening
  • Oregano oil: Relieves toothaches

LGG Featured on Black Girl Long Hair

Hi All and Happy New Year! It’s been awfully quiet around here at LGG but much has been happening off of the blog. One big accomplishment….*drum roll* Lexi’s Green Guide post “Coconut Oil As A DIY Eye Cream” was featured on Black Girl Long Hair.

12 Ways I Use Coconuts

I’m cuckoo for coconuts. Okay…that line was horribly corny. Let’s forget I ever typed that. But hey, look at what I found at a street fair in Brooklyn, NY.

It’s a coconut and I was sipping on fresh coconut water! I was in love. I use coconuts for everything. Seriously, it’s my holy grail product. Here are a few ways I use coconuts:

  1. I drink coconut water
  2. I use coconut oil as a pre-wash for my hair
  3. As a hair oil to seal in moisture
  4. Coconut oil all up in my deep conditioners
  5. I gently reheat leftover grains or vegetables with coconut oil
  6. I use both coconut oil and water in my smoothies
  7. Coconut oil as a cuticle oil
  8. Coconut oil as a night time lip treatment to keep my lips smooth and plumped.
  9. Oil pulling for oral care
  10. As a body oil for sexy skin
  11. As a massage oil for sexy time
  12. As an eye cream for my dark circles

I get a jar of unrefined, extra virgin coconut oil for the kitchen and one for my beauty use. Both jars last for months. At $9 a jar I’d say that’s a pretty good deal.

How do you use your coconuts?

What To Do If You Over Exfoliate

I bought these exfoliating gloves from Target. If you know me then you know that I’m a big advocate for exfoliation. I was excited about my purchase. Admittedly, a little too excited. For three days I exfoliated my skin twice a day with the gloves. By the fourth day dry scaly patches began to form on my skin. I realized that I was completely a bit overzealous with the exfoliation. Now I was stuck figuring out how to get my skin back to its supple state. I figured that if the LOC (liquid, oil, cream) method works on my hair then it should work on my skin. Using this method in about 3 days my skin was back to normal.

The Method

First, I made sure to step away from the exfoliation gloves. I used Shea Moisture’s Coconut & Hibiscus Body Wash as my moisturizing soap. Then, once I stepped out the shower and my skin was still damp I applied coconut oil.

After that I slathered on the pure shea butter.

My skin was back to feeling baby soft in no time. My skin feels so good that I might use this method more often. I’ve learned my lesson. From now on I’ll use my gloves once a month and be sure to be gentle on my skin.

If you ever over exfoliate try this method and let me know how it works out for you.

The 5 Best All Natural Lubes

Does being green in the bedroom sound boring and unsexy? Never that at Lexi’s Green Guide! We want you to make it nasty the green way starting off with lubricants. The lubricants in the stores contain icky chemicals and parabens that are not safe for our bodies. Luckily, there are green-friendly oil and water based personal lubricants. Oil based lubricants are great because they last longer (less reapplications) and provide more slip. The downside to oil based lubricants is that they cannot be used with latex condoms. The oil will cause the latex to break down and tear. The other option is a water based lubricant. Although, it is not usually as long-lasting as oil, they provide enough slip, closely feel like our bodies own lubricant, and are safe to use with latex.

Oil Based Lubricants

Use Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil

Use Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a favorite here at Lexi’s Green Guide so you could only imagine my delight to discover another use for this awesome oil. It makes a great personal lube. It’s long-lasting and slippery without being overly greasy. Coconut Oil is solid at room temperature but once in your hands it begins to melt.

almond oil

Another option (because we like options here at LGG) is Sweet Almond Oil. It has almost no scent and is a light, non-greasy, absorbing oil. This oil is my personal favorite natural lube. Both oils are anti-bacterial. You will not have to have to worry about oils throwing off your pH and in fact, coconut oil has yeast infection fighting capabilities. Even though at first it may seem weird to use oils as lube it is completely safe and much safer than putting parabens on your body. Another great benefit to using these oils is that they are edible if bought from the food aisle in the health food store.

Get creative with your oil based lube use. I suggest warming the oils before use by placing the bottle in a cup of hot water. This will heighten the sensation of the lube when it comes in contact with the skin. Also, try using lube on other sensitive areas of the body such as the nipples or earlobes. The silky, frictionless feel on sensitive areas will have your partner begging for you.

Also, these oils are relatively inexpensive in comparison to the lubricants you buy in stores. Both oils cost about $6-$10 a bottle. Very wallet-friendly.

Water Based Lubricant

aloe vera gel

If you are using latex condoms it is important to use a water based lubricant. Aloe vera gel is a good choice. Aloe is great for your body too. Make sure that you choose a product that is pure aloe vera. This can be found in most health food stores. Aloe vera gel can be found at most health food stores and usually cost about $7-$10.

If you would like to purchase a product Sliquid Organics is a great organic lubricant brand. According to the website the ingredients for the Sliquids Organic Natural are: Purified Water, Plant Cellulose (from Cotton), Aloe Barbadensis*, Natural Tocopherols (Vitamin E), Cyamopsis (Guar Conditioners), Extracts of Hibiscus*, Flax*, Alfalfa*, Green Tea* & Sunflower Seed*, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid. *USDA Organic ingredients. It has rave reviews. This lube is safe for use with silicone toys. Purchase Sliquids from the website.

good clean love

Another great brand is Good Clean Love. According to their website the ingredients list is as follows: Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Xanthan Gum, Agar, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Natural Flavors. This is a great choice because it is edible, safe for silicone toys, and 100% vegan. Also, it is long-lasting and does not a have a sticky clean-up. Click here to purchase Good Clean Love.

Maximize the benefits of your water-based lube. Put a few drops inside of the condom to increase sensations. A little goes a long away. Any thing more than a couple of drops may cause the condom to slip off. Or put a few drops outside of the condom to reduce friction.

LGG would like to know, Would you try these organic lube alternatives?
